Chapter 17

“Dance with me,” I whispered just next to Gabby’s ear. She nodded, and I stood to help her from her chair. Placing my hand on her lower back, I then led her toward the dance floor.

For an evening that started out so full of tension, tonight had shifted in the best way. Gabby now knew just how much she meant to me, and so did the rest of her family.

Tomorrow night I’d have to go back to the chaos of Leo’s world, so for one more night I just wanted to surround myself with all things Gabby. She gave me the peace I needed to stay grounded, and her sweet smile had brought me out of some dark moments over the last couple months.

We stepped onto the dance floor, and I pulled her against me and began to sway with her. She looked up at me through her long, full lashes and bit her lip. Her blue eyes conveyed that she felt the same connection I did.

“You don’t want me to get shot, do you?” I asked with a smirk.

Laughter fell from her lips, and she buried her face against my chest. Damn girl had been pressed against me for less than twenty seconds, and I was already hard. When she lifted her head and looked back up at me, I took my chances. I lowered my mouth to hers and kissed her gently. It was completely innocent, but I hoped she could read the meaning clearly.

Gabriella had become my happiness in all the fucked-up shit I was dealing with. I needed her, because without her I knew I would fall deep into Leo’s world, and I was afraid of the effects it would have on me.

“When this case is over, I want us to go away for a week. Just the two of us. No interruptions. What do you think?” I knew I couldn’t tell her a definite date that I would be free to follow through with this plan, but I needed something to look forward to.

“That sounds like a great idea,” she said with a look of contentment. “I’m not sure how you’re doing it, but you’re making me fall for you faster than I ever intended to.”

Her words warmed me, and I knew exactly what she was talking about, because I was feeling it too. “Me too, sweetheart. Me too,” I whispered as I once again lowered my lips to hers.

My phone vibrated in my jacket pocket, and Gabby groaned. I pulled back and looked down at her. “Sorry, baby.”

“It’s okay. I know you have to take it.”

We stepped off the dance floor as I lifted my phone to my ear. “Yeah?”

“It’s time, brother,” Greyson said.

“Supposed to be tomorrow night.” Irritation filled me at the thought of my last night with Gabby being interrupted.

“Plans changed. We just got the call on the decoy phone. We meet in less than two hours. We need you here—now.” Greyson hung up without waiting for my response.

I hung my head and let out a deep breath.
